The Wildcats suffered their first shutout since a 28-0 loss to Howard on November 11, 2006 as well as their first opening day shutout since a 3-0 loss at Texas Southern on September 5, 1981. Two years prior to that, Bobby Frazier was shut out in his first game as Wildcat Head Coach in a 12-0 setback to Texas Southern.
Sims also became the first Bethune-Cookman coach to drop his debut since Sylvester Collins' 1992 team lost 31-21 to Savannah State.
Bethune-Cookman managed just 47 first-half total yards as it went scoreless for the opening 30 minutes for the second straight game as well as the second straight time against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent – Florida State kept the Wildcats scoreless in the first half back in 2013.
The Wildcats had an excellent scoring opportunity to start the second half when Kevin Thompson recovered Kaaya's fumble after a Deonte Mayo strip sack at the Hurricane 23, but the threat ended two plays later when Larry Brihm was picked off by Artie Burns.
Miami took a 7-0 lead on Kaaya's 5-yarder to Standish Dobard with 6:42 remaining in the opening quarter. The Wildcat defense forced three fourth downs plays, but the Hurricanes got the touchdown after a running into the kicker call on a field goal.
A 25-yard Michael Badgley field goal gave the Hurricanes a 10-0 lead two minutes into the second quarter. After the lightning delay, Kaaya connected with Rashawn Scott for a 17-yarder and Joe Yearby scampered 25 yards before Elder's return.
Jamaruz Thompkins was B-CU's leading rusher with 14 yards on three carries, while Jaime Wilson caught two passes for 18 yards. Defensive leaders included Diquan Richardson (five tackles) and Robert Way (four).
B-CU travels to Grambling State next Saturday.
