DELAND, Fla. –
Kailyn Williams scored a career-high 24 points in Bethune-Cookman's 69-60 loss to Tennessee State Monday afternoon at the Hatter Classic inside the Edmunds Center on the campus of Stetson University.
Olivia Jones' double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds led four Tigers in double figures as they pulled away from a 44-42 lead by holding the Wildcats (3-7) without a field goal for nearly nine minutes in the fourth quarter.
Angel Golden's lay-up gave up Bethune-Cookman its first lead of the game, 35-34, with 4:17 remaining in the third quarter. Then
Taylor Houston's (10 points) lay-up pushed the Wildcats lead to three. Tennessee State responded with an 8-0 run for a 42-37 advantage and led 44-39 after three periods.
Golden (12 points) hit a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats missed their next 12 shots from the field until
Kailyn Williams finished a traditional three-point play with 59 seconds left.
Emily Williams sank two free throws to get Bethune-Cookman within 60-56 at the 49 second mark, but the Tigers (4-6) made nine free throws down the stretch to keep the Wildcats at bay.
Kailyn Williams finished 9-of-14 from the field and 6-for-8 from the line. She also led the Wildcats with seven rebounds. Houston had six boards.
Bethune-Cookman faces Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Tuesday at 3 p.m., back at the Edmunds Center on the campus of Stetson University in DeLand.
HEAD COACH VANESSA BLAIR LEWIS
"What stood out today were turnovers and not having our upperclassmen consistently score the ball."
"The back court turnovers were huge. We'd tie the game or get close, then we make an errant pass and give them a lay-up and the noose tightens. We haven't been able to prove we can break a press."
"Tennessee State was undersized and got us to make turnovers trying to get the ball to Kailyn."
