DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – As the 2015-16 women's basketball season comes to an end with the national championship set tonight (April 5) in Indianapolis, Behtune-Cookman women's basketball collected two final honors following the historic Wildcat season as the junior duo of Kailyn Williams and Kendra Cooper were named BOXTOROW All-Americans.
After earning their first regular-season championship in school history and making the schools first post-season appearance, earning an automatic bid to the WNIT, the Wildcats garnered two additional individual post-season awards.
Williams, the New Orleans, La., native and BOXTOROW All-American First Team member was named the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a first team All-MEAC member.
She ran the weekly league honors during her junior campaign, collecting six (Nov. 30/Dec. 20/Jan.18/Jan. 25/Feb. 1/Feb. 22) during the regular-season, while also earning a league Player of the Week (Feb. 29).
On the year, “Big Kay” finished second in the league in rebounds per game, while leading B-CU with 9.0 per contest. The 6-4 centers impressive shot blocking ability dominated the MEAC as she swatted 3.5 per game (6th in NCAA), collecting 107 blocked shots on the season (6th in the NCAA).
She also collected 10 double-doubles on the season, with 12 double-figure rebounding games and earned her first career triple-double less than a week ago, when she poured in 12 points, pulled down 13 boards and blocked 12 North Carolina A&T shots during a 65-41 win at home.
Williams' 12 blocked shots on Feb. 29 marked second most during a single game in the NCAA this season, while her triple-double put her on an elite list of 19 players in the NCAA to do so this season.
Throughout her career, Williams has blocked 332 shots, ranking third among active NCAA leaders and her 3.65 game average over her three-year career, leads the nation.
Cooper, a 2016 All-MEAC Second Team honoree, was named to the BOXTOROW All-American Second Team. She finished her junior season fifth in the league in scoring, as she headed the B-CU offense with 14.1 points per game. The Spring, Texas, native scored in double-figures 20 times during the season, with seven 20+ point performances and a career-best 31 points on Dec. 21 during a 65-49 victory over Georgia Southern.
The B-CU two guard, also ranked sixth in the MEAC in assists per game (3.0), third in free throw percentage (.787) while finishing first in three-point field goal percentage (.372) and three balls made (73/2.4 per game).
