'Cats Get Road Win With Late Stand At FAMU 82-76

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – One road win at Florida A&M doesn't make up for ten road losses. But this is Bethune-Cookman. It comes pretty close.

The Wildcats posted their first road victory of the season in 11 tries (12 if you include a neutral site game) Monday with an 82-76 victory over the Rattlers in front of an enthusiastic Martin Luther Day crowd of 4,878 at the Lawson Center.

Brandon Tabb and Quinton Forrest scored 29 and 21 points, respectively, and Reggie Baker sank four free throws in the final 12.3 seconds to help the Wildcats (4-14 overall, 1-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) snap  a seven-game skid and extend their winning streak in the rivalry to six straight.

The road losses included two overtime setbacks, and the skid before Monday included a pair of two possession games. Baker's success at the line highlighted a night that the Wildcats were a season-best 84 percent (21-25) from the stripe. FAMU (4-14,2-3) was just 19-30 at the line.

"This was the one we needed," said B-CU Head Coach Gravelle Craig. "I've actually been pleased with how hard we're playing, we just haven't been able to close. Tonight we were. We've lost two or three games where it came down to free throws. "

Florida A&M (4-14,2-3) closed to 78-76 on two Marcus Barham free throws with 13 seconds left, but Baker answered to put the Wildcats back up by four. The red shirt senior grabbed a defensive rebound and added two free throws with two seconds to play.

Diamante Lewis added 14 points and six assists for the Wildcats, who also outshot Florida A&M from the field by a margin  of a season-high 48 percent (28-58) to 40 (24-60.) .

Tabb had 17 first-half points as the Wildcats parlayed 59 percent shooting into a 49-38 halftime lead. Bethune-Cookman took a 25-24 lead on a Tabb three-pointer with 10:13 left and led by as many as 12.

"When he gets going, he makes the tough shot," Craig said of Tabb, the MEAC's leading scorer. "I give him the green light."

In the second half, Florida A&M got the deficit to 74-72, but a Tabb lay-up and a putback from Forrest, who was 9-10 from the field, kept the Rattlers at bay.

"I get my points from hustle plays," said Forrest. "I play off of Tabb and Reggie and do what I can."

Desmond Williams led Florida A&M with 20.

The Wildcats host UMES Saturday.

NOTES: This was the first time since the Florida College win B-CU has outshot its opponent … This was Tabb's 13th 20-point game of the season while Forrest now has three … B-CU only had six turnovers, its second lowest total of the season … The crowd included the Florida State men's basketball team and former B-CU track star Ed'Ricus Williams, now running for the Seminoles … The Wildcats have now won three straight on Martin Luther King Day.
