Last Look: Neely's Night Finishes Off FAMU

Two School Records and A Fourth Win Over FAMU -- Not Bad

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Still basking in the 3-0 sweep of Florida A&M and delighting in the cupcakes Micaiah Hill's mom provided for her daughter's 18th birthday, Rakaya Neely couldn't completely comprehend the history she made Friday in historic Moore Gym.

Maybe it was the other two records she set. Maybe it was that Head Coach Brittany Williams relaxed curfew this once. Maybe the cupcake was that darned delicious. Reportedly, it was.

Since it was Friday and a victory over Florida A&M, history could hold. But ponder this: In the 27 years before Neely arrived, Bethune-Cookman (5-8 overall, 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) had never beaten the Rattlers in volleyball, but Neely shows up in 2014 and the Wildcats are 4-3 in the series since.

The first Wildcat volleyball player to beat FAMU four times. For now, it feels as good as the win and tastes as good as the cupcake.

"I'm still trying to process that," the senior from Lake Wales, Fla. admitted. "It is still very fulfilling to get the win against them, especially when we have a crowd like we had tonight that supports us 100 percent and when my teammates know we have each other's back."

Neely quietly surpassed Phylecia Armstrong's career total of 317 late in the second set. There was an impromptu photo op between sets for everyone's social media, then Neely delivered her two most critical blocks in the third.

Florida A&M (5-10,2-1)  had cut a 18-13 deficit to 19-17, but then Neely emphatically posted solo blocks on consecutive points to help the Wildcats regain control. By the way, those two blocks moved her total to 10, tying her with Javanne Johnson (vs. Stetson in 2002)  and Faith Landreneaux (vs. Florida Atlantic two weeks ago) for the single-match blocks record.

"Rakaya wants it. She's a competitor," Williams said. "She could have relaxed after getting the record in the second set, but she was going all-out in the third."

Alondra Bautista, who delivered a 20-20 earlier in the week at Jacksonville, posted two of her team-high eight kills down the stretch to help the Wildcats close. Jordan Jefferson had seven, but the Wildcat offense wasn't the story in what Williams and assistant coach Alvaro Sanchez both described as a "strange" match.

How bizarre, how bizarre? Bethune-Cookman finished with a season-low 27 kills. Throw in two service aces, and the Wildcat offense produced just 29 out of possible 75 points. Six of Neely's team-high 11 points came from blocking. The Wildcat defense forced 36 Rattler attack errors and held them to a negative hitting percentage.

Put it in football terms: It's like Diquan Richardson scoring more points than Larry Brihm, Jr. as the defense posts a whole bunch of safeties and creates turnovers in the opponent's end zone.

"Strange game, but a true testament that defense wins game," Williams said." Offensively, they outscored us but we held them to a negative hitting percentage. It was a big night for our blockers."

Neely entered the match trailing FAMU's Candelaria Herrera for the MEAC hitting percentage lead, but overtook the Rattler freshman Friday. However, she's in a virtual tie with her teammate Landrenaux at .327 for the lead. Neely's also second in blocks.

Setter Phalen Clark maintained her lead atop with MEAC's assist category, averaging 10.56 per set.

Bethune-Cookman enjoys a half-game lead in MEAC Southern Division over North Carolina A&T, who hosts South Carolina State Sunday. The two teams meet in Moore Gym Friday. Before that, the Wildcats host North Florida Tuesday.
