BOCA RATON, Fla. – Troy scored eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, to come from behind and grab a 9-6 victory from Bethune-Cookman on Sunday afternoon inside FAU Softball Stadium, as part of the FAU Kick-Off Classic hosted by Florida Atlantic University.
Â
With Bethune-Cookman (1-4) leading 4-1 midway through the fifth inning, the Troy Trojans exploded for five runs in the home-half of the frame to step out in front – eventually holding on for the win.
Â
Logan Calhoun began the at-bat for Troy (3-2) reaching safely on an error, while teammate Kaylee Hussey followed being hit by a pitch from freshman hurler
Destiny Enriquez to advance Calhoun into scoring position. The Trojans first baseman would make her way around to score on the next play, cutting the game at 4-2 in favor of BCU, as Jordan Gray laid down a bunt that was mishandled by BCU's
Jacki Smith at third base.
Â
Trojans right fielder Carli Kayler's RBI single up the middle cut the Wildcats advantage down to 4-3, before the Trojans used a three-run home run to right field by leadoff hitter Becca Hartley – the first of the year for the shortstop, to allow Troy to take the lead, 6-4.
Â
Bethune-Cookman brought a run back in the top of the sixth when freshman designated player
Yvonne Siordia singled to center, bringing around
Brianna Sanders to put BCU to within a 6-5 deficit.
Â
However, the Trojans would add another home run in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run blast by Jordan Gray – her first of the year, to jump the lead out to an insurmountable margin at 9-5.
Â
The Cats mustered up a run in the top of the seventh, using freshman second baseman
Ryan Jackson's single to left in order to drive across
Mariah Davis for the final score line of 9-6. Davis reached safely earlier in the inning with her third hit of the game on a single to left.
Â
With the game tied at 1-all entering the top of the fifth inning, BCU surged out to a 4-1 advantage with three runs in their at-bat to kick off the frame.
Â
Siordia began the at-bat with a double, only to come in two batters later with the help of an
Annie Bakenhus RBI single to right, pushing the Wildcats in front for the first time, 2-1. BCU added to the lead when Davis laid down a bunt single to score
Jacki Smith from third, while Bakenhus stole home for the first time in her career to give the Cats a 4-1 edge.
Â
The win went to Troy's Rachel Rigney in a starting role, as she worked six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and walking a batter. The win moved her record to 2-1 on the year. She was relieved by Claire Graves for an inning, as Graves allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and added a strikeout.
Â
The loss went to BCU freshman
Destiny Enriquez, as she dropped her record to 0-3 on the season. She worked three innings out of the bullpen, allowing eight runs (six earned) on five hits and issued a walk. Classmate
Mariah Estrada did not factor into the decision in the start, working three innings herself, allowing a run on two hits.
Â
Bethune-Cookman steps back onto the field Friday, Feb. 17, when the Wildcats travel to Lake Buena Vista, Florida for the
Disney Diamond 9 Orange Blossom Classic at the Wide World of Sports Complex. The Wildcats will open with the weekend with games against Delaware (3:15 p.m.) and Marshall (5:30 p.m.) on Friday.
