DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman's chances for a high seed at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament have long passed, but that doesn't mean the Wildcats don't have a say about the conference standings.
Â
Led by
Brandon Tabb 's 22  points, Bethune-Cookman (7-20, 4-9) took control of the game in the first half as they snapped Norfolk State's  ten-game winning streak with 75-65 victory that muddled the MEAC standings.
Jeffrey Altidort,
Brandon Suggs,
Quinton Forrest and Tabb combined for the last seven Bethune-Cookman points from the free throw line to put the game out of reach to give the Wildcats their second straight win.
Â
In three days' time, the Wildcats showed they can compete with the high rollers, beating third-ranked Hampton on Saturday, and second-ranked Norfolk State on Monday.
"We played hard, we had a chip on our shoulder," said Forrest. "We're fighting to get a little bit of respect in MEAC."
"We came together as a team and understood where we were, and we knew that these teams aren't better than us since we were losing by one or two points," said Tabb. "We came in, focused, locked in, and got the win."
Â
That win not only helped B-CU move up a spot in the conference standings, it gave league-leading North Carolina Central a game and a half lead over Norfolk State with three games remaining.
Â
North Carolina Central had defeated Howard earlier Monday and admitted on their twitter feed they were paying close attention to the Wildcats' success in the second half. Afterwards, Central didn't mind it when B-CU suggested the Eagles owed the Wildcats pizza and would send the bill to NCCU Head Coach Levelle Moton.
Â
Four Wildcats scored in double digits in a win over Norfolk State: Â In addition to Tabb's 22, Forrest scored 16 and recorded four steals, Altidort added 12 points and six rebounds while
Diamante Lewis had 10 points and seven assists.
Suggs matched his career high for the second game in a row scoring nine points while grabbing five rebounds.
"We played as a team, and we stayed as a team. And that's all that matters," said Tabb.
The Wildcats performed well on defense once again. While Bethune-Cookman held Norfolk State to 37.1% shooting from the field, the Wildcats converted 11 three-pointers on 52.4% shooting, as well as 18 free throws on hitting 85.7% from the line.
Â
The Wildcats go on their final road trip of the season this weekend, facing North Carolina Central on Saturday and North Carolina A&T Monday.
