DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Ashanti Hunt scored 17 and
Alea Godfrey 12 Thursday in Bethune-Cookman's 66-53 regular season finale victory over Florida A&M, 66-53 on Coach Cy Court in Historic Moore Gymnasium.
Florida A&M (11-18 overall, 9-8 in MEAC) rallied from an 11-point deficit and tied the game at 37-37 and again at 39-39 with 5:25 to play in the third quarter
Bethune-Cookman (19-9 overall, 15-1 in MEAC) pulled away to a 52-43 lead at the end of the third quarter and led 62-45 on
Chasimmie Brown's lay-up with 5:08 left.
Hunt, a sophomore, was 5-8 from the field and 7-8 from the line. Godfrey, one of four seniors playing their final home game, was 5-9 from the field off the bench.
Kanesha Battle and
Kendra Cooper had nine and seven respectively. Meanwhile Kaylin Williams recorded six points, six rebounds and five blocks.
Shal Burney-Robinson had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Florida A&M.
The win gives B-CU its highest win total since the 1984-85 team went 21-5. Last year's team was 18-13. The Lady Wildcats re already assured of a second straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season championship and the No. 1 seed for next week's conference tournament. They'll open tournament play Wednesday at noon against the winner of the No. 8 seed- No. 9 seed game.
