DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman committed three first inning errors and allowed three runs in the opening half-inning, eventually leading to a 5-0 loss for the Wildcats to visiting Tennessee Tech in non-conference baseball action Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The game was the first of a three-game weekend series between the two teams.
Â
Tennessee Tech (8-2) pitcher Michael Wood went the distance for the Golden Eagles, earning his first shutout of the year.
Â
On the reverse side of things, Bethune-Cookman (6-3) suffered its first home loss of the campaign, as the Wildcats fell behind 3-0 in the opening inning.
Â
Tennessee Tech centerfielder Alex Junior doubled in the leadoff spot, and advanced to third on the first of three opening inning errors charged to BCU. He would score a play later off a Collin Harris RBI single to short. After back-to-back wild pitches from BCU starter Donté Lindsay, Harris crossed the plate courtesy a throwing error charged to catcher
Jordan Stacy trying to cut down the runner at third.
Â
The lead would swell to 3-0 when a Chase Chambers single found its way through the right side, plating Kevin Strohschein on the play.
Â
After a rocky start, Lindsay would settle down to retire the next 10 batters in order. He would finish the night accepting the loss with six innings pitched, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, three walks and five strikeouts. Of the six hits allowed by Lindsay, four occurred in the opening frame – as well as the three runs allowed.
Â
The Golden Eagles added to the lead with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, respectfully.
Â
With the loss, Lindsay fell to 0-1 for the year.
Â
The win went to Tennessee Tech's Wood, bumping his record to 2-1 on the year. In the complete game win, he scattered five hits and struck out five.
Â
Meanwhile, the Tennessee Tech defense played just as well on the night, with the Golden Eagles turning three double plays against the Wildcats.
Â
BCU was led at the dish by five players with a hit apiece, including junior left fielder
Adonis Lao with a hit in three-straight games.
Â
Bethune-Cookman will look to even the series on Saturday at 1 p.m., back inside Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
