DeLAND, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Softball dropped a pair of games on Friday during the opening day of the Hatter Classic hosted by Stetson at Patricia Wilson Field. BCU fell in the first game to LIU-Brooklyn by a count of 4-2, before stumbling to host Stetson, 13-2 in the nightcap.
Â
LIU-BROOKLYN 4, BCU 2
Bethune-Cookman senior catcher
Kaitlin Alamprese produced two RBIs off a pair hits, but it was not enough as the Wildcats fell to LIU-Brooklyn by a score of 4-2 at Patricia Wilson Field in DeLand, Florida. The game was the first on the weekend for BCU at the Hatter Classic hosted by Stetson University.
Â
Bethune-Cookman (1-15) jumped on the board first in the opening half-inning.
Â
After back-to-back bunt singles from
Mariah Davis and
Iesha Waters, freshman right fielder
Ryan Jackson was hit by a Tallie Woodson pitch to load the bases for the Wildcats with nobody out. LIU-Brooklyn (7-8) would turn a double play that eventually saw Waters scamper to third. But with the help of an Alamprese single back up the middle, Waters and Jackson would score to give BCU the early lead, 2-0.
Â
LIU-Brooklyn would knot the game with runs in the bottom of the first and second innings, respectively.
Â
The Blackbirds would produce the final 4-2 margin with a pair of runs in the home-half of the third on the strength of an Angie Vazquez two-run home run.
Â
The win went to Woodson in the circle, evening her record at 3-3 on the year. She worked all seven innings, allowing two runs on 10 hits and two strikeouts.
Â
Meanwhile, the loss went to BCU right-hander
Sabrina Anguiano, dropping her to 0-4 on the campaign. She worked the complete game, allowing four runs on six hits, a walk and four strikeouts.
Â
Alongside Alamprese's two RBI performance, Davis supplied three hits to lead the team in that department. Waters and Jackson joined Alamprese with a pair of hits each.
Â
STETSON 13, BCU 2
After falling behind early, Stetson scored nine unanswered runs to collect a 13-2 victory in five innings over Bethune-Cookman at Patricia Wilson Field in DeLand, Florida. With the loss, BCU fell to 0-2 in the Hatter Classic hosted by the Stetson Hatters.
Â
With Stetson (11-3) plating four runs in the top-half of the opening frame, Bethune-Cookman struck for two runs of its own in the home-half of the inning.
Â
The first five batters reached safely for the Wildcats in the batting order.
Â
With the bases loaded,
Kaitlin Alamprese drew a base on balls RBI to score leadoff hitter
Mariah Davis. That was followed by a
Kailey Richard RBI single through the left side to drive across
Iesha Waters.
Â
With BCU (1-16) trimming the Hatters lead at 4-2 after one inning in the books, Stetson immediately answered with five runs in the top of the second, and surging to an insurmountable advantage.
Â
The second inning scoring was highlighted by a Maggie Fritts two-run single past BCU relief pitcher
Bailey Conner.
Â
The Hatters added a single run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to enforce the run-rule.
Â
Brooke Hutto (3-0) picked up the win for the Hatters in the pitcher's circle. The loss went to BCU's
Destiny Enriquez (0-8).
Â
Bethune-Cookman will look to end its current 14-game losing skid Saturday when the Wildcats take on Cornell at 10 a.m., back at Patricia Wilson Field. The Maroon and Gold conclude the day with a game against South Dakota at 2:30 p.m.
