DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Senior
Alvaro Barrera delivered the deciding doubles point, clinched the match with his singles victory and became Bethune-Cookman's all-time singles victory leader as the Wildcats snapped a nine-match season opening losing with a 4-3 victory over Hampton Thursday.
Barrera's 6-0,6-4 victory over Peter Odegbami at No.5 gave the Wildcats (1-9) an insurmountable lead and was the senior's 43rd career victory, moving him past former teammate Diego Garavito.
Earlier, Barrera and David Ocampa combined to win at No. 3 doubles to give Bethune-Cookman the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
"The win is not only mine, it's a team win and the effort of everyone is reflected in the score," Barrera said. "About Diego's record, well, of course I'll make some jokes with him, it's always nice to break a record, but I'd really want to focus on today's first win of the season, also a conference match, and that I'm so proud of everyone in this team of fighters."
Jose Plazas and Juan Ruiz each won a singles and doubles match to give
Val Villucci her first win as B-CU's Men's Head Coach. Earlier in the day, Bethune-Cookman fell 4-0 to Davidson.
"We used that loss as a positive and motivated us to take down a team that wouldn't quit," Villucci said. "In the end, we were the more focused team. It's good to see Alvaro has made his mark on the program, but I know he won't be happy unless the team keeps working hard and is moving in a positive direction."
The Wildcats host Appalachian State Sunday.
