DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – It hit
Alvaro Barrera when he stepped on the court for singles play.
"This is it, my final match," the senior said. "I didn't have my doubles partner. It was just me. "
All three Bethune-Cookman seniors – Barrera and
Pablo Lopez in doubles play, plus
Greg Almeida in singles – registered a Senior Day victory, but the Wildcats dropped a 6-1 decision to Florida A&M Saturday at City Island Tennis Center in their season finale.
The Wildcats (1-18 overall, 0-4) were eliminated from post-season play last week.
"We did all we could this year," Barrera said. "No regrets. I've met so many great people, made a lot of friends, it has been an incredible run."
Alemida, Barrera and Lopez were members of the 2015 team that advanced to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament championship match for the first time in program history. Last year's team was the first to go into a conference tournament as a No. 1 seed from the Southern Division.
"They have to feel good about what they've accomplished," said B-CU Head Coach
Val Villucci. "This has been a tough year. Sometimes you have to go through this and take what you came from it.
???????Barrera ends his careers as B-CU's all-time singles victory leader while Almeida, who dispatched Karlyn Small 6-0 6-0 for the lone Wildcat point, finishes fifth on the overall victory list. And then you had Saturday's final wins.
"Not a bad way to go," Lopez said.
Florida A&M (8-11,3-1) clinched the No. 2 Southern Division seed and snapped a two-match losing streak in the rivalry.
