STATESBORO, Ga. – Bethune-Cookman concluded a 2-1 stay at the Bash In The Boro with a 3-1 (25-18,25-16,23-25,25-21) victory over host Georgia Southern before failing 3-1 (25-19,18-25,25-20,25-19) to North Florida Saturday.
Rakaya Neely had 14 kills, hit .722 – the third-best single-match hitting percentage in program history – and had eight blocks – tying the fourth-best single-match total to key the Wildcats' victory.
Against UNF, freshman
Jordan Jefferson extended her double-double run to six in as many matches with 14 kills and 19 digs while
Phalen Clark had a career-high 20 digs.
B-CU (2-4) won the tournament on the strength of its 2-1 record. Neely was named MVP and was joined by Jefferson and Clark on the all-tournament team.
GEORGIA SOUTHERN MATCH
In addition to Neely, who delivered the winning kill in set two,
Jordan Jefferson had11 kills and 15 digs, while
Micaiah Hill had 10 kills and four blocks as the Wildcats controlled the first two sets.
Georgia Southern (2-3) extended the match by erasing a 20-18 deficit in the third set, but Bethune-Cookman used a 4-0 run to take a 22-19 lead, and after Georgia Southern closed to 22-21, got two kills from Neely and another from Jefferson to clinch the match.
Phalen Clark had 43 assists, while
Rechez Lindsay and
Alana Handy posted 20 and 17 digs, respectively.
NORTH FLORIDA MATCH
Clark finished with 37 assists and 20 digs for the Wildcats in a match they managed to even up in the second set with an 8-0 run.
Neely had eight kills, while Handy finished with five kills and 13 digs. Lindsay posted 15 digs.
B-CU returns to action next Friday at the USF Invitational, facing the hosts at 7 p.m.
