WASHINGTON, D.C. – Bethune-Cookman's four-game season-opening road trip ended with a 26-24 loss at Howard in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Greene Stadium.
Bison quarterback Caylin Newton, the younger brother of Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, scored on a 5-yard run with 39 seconds remaining that sent the Wildcats to a 1-3 record overall and 0-1 in league play.
Bethune-Cookman took a 21-20 lead with 8:58 remaining in the third quarter on Que'shaun Byrd's 24-yard run, then added to it on
Uriel Hernandez' career-long 42-yard field goal with 1:24 left in the period.
The Wildcat defense had made two successful stands prior to Howard's game-winning drive, but Newton, who finished with 140 yards rushing and 157 passing, converted a pair of third-downs to keep the march going.
Larry Brihm, Jr. completed 16 of 28 passes for 185 yards for the Wildcats, including a second quarter 23-yard touchdown to
Frank Brown, who finished with seven catches for 84 yards.
Brihm also registered the Wildcats' first score on a 20-yard run in the opening period.
Michael Jones paced the B-CU rushing game with 112 yards on 21 carries. Defensively,
Diquan Richardson posted 11 tackles.
The Wildcats host Savannah State on Saturday, October 30 at 4 p.m.
