Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cardiac Cats Comeback to OT Road Win

Diakite had a career night with 21 points on his double-double

WASHINGTON, D.C. - For the first time this season, Bethune-Cookman men's basketball came from behind on the the road and erased a 10-point second half deficit to defeat Howard, 92-87, in overtime at Clayden Arena on the campus of Trinity University. In a game that was moved from Howard's (3-15, 0-2) campus due to infrastructure damage, Soufiyane Diakite led BCU with a career-high 21 points and 13 rebounds.

The Wildcats forced overtime when Diakite lobbed to Shawntrez Davis on the fast break and the junior scored a no-look behind-the-back alley oop off the glass with one second remaining. Davis was fouled on the play but missed the go-ahead free throw and the teams were deadlocked at 82.

BCU (7-9, 2-0) pulled ahead for good on a Houston Smith lay-up for an 86-85 lead at 3:18, and held Howard without a made field goal in the extra period.

Isaiah Bailey was instrumental off the bench with 22 points and nine of BCU's 51 rebounds. Smith (10) and Jeff Altidort (16) joined Bailey in double-figures, while Davis  chipped in 12 rebounds.

With Howard leading by 10 and 9:22 remaining in the game, BCU slowly began chipping away. Altidort's lay-in at 4:17 made it a 74-72 lead before Howard scored six-straight and gained an eight-point lead with three minutes to go.

Over the final 1:35, BCU scored regulation's final six points with a Diakite connection. The Bronx, N.Y., rubbed the backboard with a lay-in, and then later made a pair of free-throws.

The Bison took a 45-42 lead at halftime with a rally of their own. The Wildcats led by eight when Bailey sank a pair at 9:13, but that would be the last time the Wildcats buzzed the scoreboard. Howard wnt on a 17-3 run until Diakite broke the pace with a bucket at 3:33.

The win gave the Wildcats their first win at Howard since 2012, and the year also marked the last time the 'Cats got off to a 2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference start.
RJ Cole scored 32 and C.J. Williams nearly matched him with 30 for the Bison.
