DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman hosts a pair key of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division Matches this weekend with North Carolina Central coming to Historic Moore Gym Friday at 6 p.m. and North Carolina A&T for Senior Day Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Lady Wildcats (11-13 overall, 3-2) trail North Carolina A&T (9-9,4-1) and Florida A&M (5-13,4-1) by one match entering the second half of league play. Bethune-Cookman was swept by the Aggies and North Carolina Central (4-15,2-3) last month.
Sunday will feature seniors
J'nai Higgins and
Meraiah Hill being honored in pre-match ceremonies.
HOW TO WIN A NUMBER ONE SEED: To win their third No. 1 seed for the MEAC tournament in four tournament, the Lady Wildcats need several scenarios to unfold. The simplest one? Win out and get Florida A&M to beat North Carolina A&T. That would give B-CU the tiebreaker over Florida A&M.
HOME SWEET HISTORIC MOORE GYM: The Lady Wildcats are unbeaten (13-0) in Moore Gym in MEAC play in the
Brittany Williams era. In 2016, B-CU went 4-1 while playing at Warner Christian Academy while Moore Gym was being renovated.
CHASING RECORDS: Jordan Jefferson and Hill are both within striking distance of single season records. Jefferson needs 36 digs to break Normarie Rolon's 2015 mark of 397 while Hill needs 20 blocks to eclipse
Rakaya Neely's total of 108 last year. The team is on pace to break or at least match last year's blocks per set average of 2.3. The current average is 2.27.
.500: A sweep of the weekend would put B-CU at .500 after 26 matches for the first time since 2004. That team finished 14-12.
STATS AND STUFF: Tynesha Adams is tenth in the MEAC in hitting percentage (.224), Higgins seventh in assists (6.84 per set), Hill and
Delaine Fulton are 1-3 in blocks per set (1.2 and 1.0, respectively),
Shayla Eugene is sixth in digs (3.57 per set) while Jefferson is third in digs per set (4.16) and sixth in kills (3.24)
League play highlight stats include
Faith Landreneaux fourth in hitting percentage (.353) and service aces (eight) while
Jade Smith is fifth in blocks (.86). Jefferson's leading the league with 5.05 sets against conference opponents.
SCOUTING: The Eagles are led by Arlanda Faulkner (151 kills) and Morgan Goodwin. Since beating B-CU, they've lost seven of their last eight … Courteney Pitt paces North Carolina A&T with an average of 3.91 kills per set. The Aggies have won their last four.
WEEKEND COVERAGE: CATEYE Network will stream both matches with Willie Love on the call. The usual array of live stats and tweeting from @BCUvolleyball will also be available.
