DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Shawntrez Davis set new career-highs with 30 points and 17 rebounds, but Bethune-Cookman dropped a tough 83-79 decision to Norfolk State Monday night at Historic Moore Gymnasium. BCU (12-12, 6-3) nearly erased a pair of nine-point second-half deficits, but Brandon Tabb's fadeaway three from the deep right wing was off and NSU (8-16, 6-3) moved its win streak to four games.
Davis recorded his team-high 10th double-double and was one of three Wildcats in double-figures, joining Tabb's 17 points and Isaiah Bailey's 13. Bailey extended his double-figure scoring streak to 14 games. Davis set a season-best with nine made free throws in 13 attempts, and BCU went 29-41 at the line.
The game was close throughout as neither team led by more than nine. BCU held a 40-39 edge at the break, but NSU came out on fire to begin the latter period. The Wildcats held the Spartans without a field goal for the final 2:56, but the visitors cashed in from the stripe by sinking seven of their final nine free throws.
The Wildcats continue their four-game home stand at Historic Moore Gymnasium with a Feb. 10 matchup vs. UMES. The action is set to get underway at 4 p.m.
