DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – One of things Bethune-Cookman Head Coach
Val Villucci has been working on is the Lady Wildcats' mental toughness. It came through Tuesday in a 5-2 victory over Fordham at City Island Tennis Center.
Matea Roki,
Karen Romero and
Alejandra Vidal each won three- set matches as Bethune-Cookman (6-5) won its sixth consecutive victory and is .over 500 for the first time this season after starting 0-5.
Romero, who was part of a 7-6 win with Vidal that saw them fight back from six match points, rallied from a one-set deficit in her No. 4 singles match to deliver the team victory.
"I'm proud of these women. They're fighters who never quit," Villucci said. "We constantly work on mental toughness and it's been paying off."
After
Rehaana Butt avoided a third set by clinching her No. 2 singles match in a second-set tiebreaker, Roki set the tone with a convincing No. 1 singles third set decision while Romero and Vidal were battling to put away the Rams (4-6).
"Three setters are what get you team wins and keep you positive," Villucci said.
Roki and Butt each won their sixth straight singles match, while the two doubles tandems – Roki/Butt and Romero/Vidal – have both won eight in a row.
