Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. –
Kailey Richard's RBI single in the top of the 10th inning was enough to score
Iesha Waters for the game-winning run, allowing Bethune-Cookman to take a 4-3 win over North Carolina A&T and clinch the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division series at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, North Carolina.
With the game tied at 3-all in the top of the 10th inning, it was senior second baseman
Kailey Richard delivered a one-out single through the left side, pushing across senior first baseman
Iesha Waters from third after she was moved over via sac bunt from
Alexis Bermudez to start the frame.
That gave BCU the 4-3 lead.
The game went to international rules with a runner placed on second after neither team was able to score in the eighth or ninth inning, respectfully.
With a runner on third for North Carolina A&T (6-25, 3-3 MEAC) and one away in the bottom of the 10th, Bethune-Cookman freshman pitcher
Victoria Guzman was able to get Zadia Davis and Marcey Jiles to strikeout swinging, giving the Wildcats the series win on the road.
Bethune-Cookman (18-21, 4-2 MEAC) came out fast, as the Wildcats scored two runs in the top of the second inning.
Kailey Richard started things off reaching on an error charged to North Carolina A&T second baseman Azaria Isbell.
Kaiya Epps-Lee followed with a run-scoring double to left, allowing BCU the early 1-0 advantage. Sophomore third baseman
Yvonne Siordia added to the lead when she plated Epps-Lee with her double to right center.
The homestanding Aggies responded to knot the game at 2-all in the bottom of the fourth inning.
After singling to begin the N.C. A&T at-bat, Isbell would come around to score on an error by BCU shortstop
Jacki Smith. The play began, however, with Zadia Davis' fielder's choice. The Aggies added the tying run off the end of a Samantha Ramirez ground out to Richard at second, as Davis trotted home from third.
The Wildcats moved ahead at 3-2 in the top of the fifth as
Ryan Jackson's single up the middle crossed
Jacki Smith from third. Smith reached in her at-bat on a fielder's choice, later advancing into scoring position on an error charged to the N.C. A&T third baseman Stephanie Williams.
North Carolina A&T tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the frame when Davis singled to center, pushing across Mohagony Headen for the score.
Guzman earned the win for Bethune-Cookman in the pitcher's circle as she tossed 4.2 innings in a relief effort, allowing just one hit, one walk and striking out seven batters. With the win, she improved to 5-6 on the campaign.
The loss went to N.C. A&T starter Zadaisha Waddell, dropping her to 2-6 on the year. She worked nine frames, giving up two unearned runs on nine hits and collecting a pair of strikeouts.
Bethune-Cookman was led at the plate by Jackson and
Taylor Sherritt each registering two hits on the day. Meanwhile, Richard's lone hit of the game proved to be the series-winner for the Maroon and Gold.
BCU is in action next on Wednesday, April 4, as the Wildcats travel to Jacksonville for a doubleheader against the JU Dolphins beginning at 5 p.m.
