DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
Yudika Rodriguez fired the only under-par score of the tournament Friday afternoon, while teammate
Mackenzie Butzer hoisted the individual champions trophy to help lead Bethune-Cookman Women's Golf to the 2018 Lady Cat Invitational title at LPGA International.
Bethune-Cookman (323-297=620, +44) trailed North Carolina A&T by four strokes after Thursday's opening round.
In Friday's final 18 holes, three of the four participating golfers for the Maroon and Gold lowered their scores from Thursday's opener. That allowed the host Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman to claim the team trophy.
Yudika Rodriguez, a junior from Salinas, Puerto Rico, lowered her scorecard by nine strokes as she produced the only sub-par round of the event. She opened Thursday with an 81, while bouncing back to record a 2-under par 70 on Friday. That allowed her to tie for first on the individual leaderboard alongside a familiar face.
Fellow BCU golfer
Mackenzie Butzer, a senior from Chatham, Ontario, was competing in her final home event as a BCU golfer. The Ursuline College product produced a 6-over 78 in the opening round, but rallied to card a 1-over 73 in Friday's 18 holes. Butzer matched Rodriguez atop the leaderboard after both rounds were complete, forcing a playoff between the teammates.
The two squared off on hole 10 on the Hills Course, and went three additional holes before Butzer collected the win, allowing her the individual medalist award.
Isabela Miravite (83-73=156, +12) lowered her scorecard from round one to two by 10 strokes. She would finish tied for third overall and earn her first all-tournament team award as a member of the BCU squad. The former Chicago State student-athlete transferred into the program in January.
With BCU playing with just four golfers, the final member was junior
Samyra Lewis is Columbia, Maryland. The Oakland Mills High alum carded mirror scores of 81 across her two rounds to finish at 162 (+18) and tied for 10th in the tournament field.
North Carolina A&T (319-327=646, +70) would finish second after leading on day one. A second-year program in men's and women's golf, the Aggies used Sofia Alvarez (77-79=156, +12) to earn the team runner-up award. The Venezuelan would finish tied for third overall in the field alongside BCU's Miravite.
The top five performers were rounded out by Sacred Heart's Chelsea Sedlar (79-80=159, +15). North Carolina A&T performer Bo Young Park (79-81=160, +16) finished sixth and earned a place on the all-tournament team.
