TAMPA, Fla. - Kyle Corbin dinged a solo homer and picked up run-scoring single, but Bethune-Cookman dropped a 5-3 decision to #24 USF Tuesday night at the USF Baseball Stadium.
Both sides were held without a dent in the score column until the third. Corbin sent a 2-1 offering over the right field wall for the first run of the game.
However, the lead was short-lived with a pair of Bull (27-14) runs in the home half of the frame. Shortstop Coco Montes doubled home Tyler Dietrich, and then two-hole batter Duke Stunkerl, Jr. drove in Montes for the lead.
BCU (17-25) answered in the fourth. Designated hitter
Michael Deeb reached and later beat a throw to the plate on a
Zach Spivey RBI single.
As was the case in the previous inning, a Wildcat lead was brief as USF regained the lead, 3-2, on a Kyle Phillips solo homer.
Corbin tied the game in the top of the fifth with an RBI single up the middle to score
Adonis Lao on an unearned run.
USF scored the game's final runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single through the left side by David Villar and sacrifice fly from JD Dutka.
Jordan Pinto made his second consecutive midweek start and pitched three innings. He allowed two earned runs off four hits, walked two, and struck out one in a no-decision.
Brady Norris (0-1) took the loss with three earned runs off four hits in 1.2 innings. He did not issue a walk and picked up a pair of strikeouts.
Joe Calamita needed just two pitches to register an out for a third of an inning pitched, and
Isaak Gutierrez scattered just a couple of hits over three scoreless innings.
USF's Connor Eason (1-0) earned the win with an unearned run off one hit in 1.1 innings of relief action. Andrew Perez picked up his seventh save with a scoreless ninth.
The Wildcats return to MEAC action this weekend with a three-game series at North Carolina A&T. The start of a Sarurday doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. on Apr. 28 in Greensobro, N.C.
