DELAND, Fla. -- Bethune-Cookman fell one epic comeback short of a perfect weekend as the Lady Wildcats fell 3-2 (25-14,15-25,25-21,24-26,15-13) to host Stetson in the final game of the Stetson Invitational Saturday after dispatching Brown 3-1 (27-25,25-16,17-25,25-22) earlier in the day.
The Lady Wildcats (7-6) had extended their winning streak to four matches with the Brown victory and were within one point of going 3-0 in the tournament before Stetson (8-4) rallied to take the fourth set and then took a commanding 10-3 fifth set lead.
Bethune-Cookman rallied to ties of 11-11 and 12-12 on kills from
Delaine Fulton and
Jordan Jefferson, but the Hatters scored two unanswered points to take control.
Bethune-Cookman, Stetson and Brown (6-3) each concluded the tournament with 2-1 record.
Jefferson and
Miranda White each earned all-tournament honors.
Jefferson double-doubled in all three tournament matches, and eclipsed her previous career high of 23 digs first with 24 against Brown then 25 against Stetson. She had 18 kills against Stetson.
White had 25 kills in the Brown victory, the most for a B-CU player since Janeen Davis against North Carolina Central in 2011. She had 11 digs against Brown, and then 17 kills against the Hatters.
Micaiah Hill had a combined 14 kills and eight blocks in the two matches. Fulton had seven of her 10 kills against Stetson and 11 blocks on the day.
Shayla Eugene had 31 blocks on the day, 20 against Stetson.
Freshman
Ryleigh Taylor had 31 assists in the Stetson match and 50 on the day.
B-CU returns to action Tuesday at North Florida.
