LAKE NONA, Fla. – By the end of Day 2 of the HBCU Nationals, the only thing getting in the Bethune-Cookman Men's Team way was themselves.
Three Wildcats advanced to flight finals Friday at the USTA National Campus as B-CU all but clinched the team championship.
Bethune-Cookman leads Xavier 22-18 in the team standings. One Xavier loss in doubles play gives the Wildcats their first-ever men's championship in the tournament's 18-year history.
After
Jose Plazas' unfortunate set back to North Carolina Central's Gabriel Jacques, the rest of the team went unbeaten until
Phillip Lynch and
Juan Navarro met in their flight semifinal, with Lynch taking a 3-6,6-3,1-0 (5) decision to advance to Saturday's championship against Serhii Karchev of Morgan State.
It will be an all B-CU championship in another flight with Victors Castro and Bravo battling.
On the women's side,
Michelle Ncube earned her Wildcat card with her first victory over a Florida A&M opponent, downing Alyean Hubeaut to advance to her championship flight. She'll meet Asmari Faluki of Morgan State Saturday.
Karen Romero's three-match winning run ended in the semifinals.
B-CU's men's doubles teams also won both their matches late Friday.
