DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – So when does
Trevor Merritt know he's going to make an interception?
Days before.
No, no, no, the Bethune-Cookman cornerback isn't that clairvoyant. He's just prepared.
Merritt registered his second pick of the season last week in the Wildcats' 37-29 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener at Howard. He had that pick six in the season opener against Jackson State in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge and had a couple of near misses at Mississippi Valley State.
Yes, his ability to break on the ball rivals Rashean Mathis, Nick Collins and all the other Wildcat greats who have patrolled the secondary, but Merritt takes great pride in what he does leading up to gameday.
"It all starts in the film room," Merritt said. "You take the time and you start to notice the quarterback's tendencies and make the adjustments."
Both of Merritt's interceptions have come in expected passing situations. Last week's came with Bethune-Cookman holding on to a lead and Howard having to throw the ball to get back in the game.
"It makes it a lot easier," Merritt said. "The defensive line doesn't have to focus on the run and can concentrate on rushing the quarterback and we're prepared for the pass."
