WASHINGTON, D.C. – Bethune-Cookman's upset bid at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament faded into late Friday night as Morgan State pulled away to a 3-1 (25-23,28-30,25-20,25-19) victory in the quarterfinals at Howard University.
Zoe McBride had 20 kills as the Bears (17-12) advanced to a Saturday semifinal against North Carolina A&T.
The Lady Wildcats concluded their 2019 campaign at 8-24.
BCU evened the match at 1-1 with its second set victory on a
Kortney Curtis service ace. Morgan State responded by taking an early 8-3 lead in the third set and turning a 3-1 deficit into a 9-4 lead in the fourth.
Spoiled in the setback were
Jordan Jefferson's 44
th career double-double of 17 kills and 10 digs and one more
Shayla Eugene defensive effort that saw the senior post 27 digs, the sixth highest single-match total in program history. Eugene finishes her career with 940 digs and a season-single record of 530.
Also spoiled was freshman
Alleah Dallas' effort of 12 kills and five blocks. She hit .526.
Playing their final matches, seniors
Sterling Williamson and
Miranda White posted seven and six kills, respectively, with White hitting .500.
Ryleigh Taylor and Curtis finished with 22 and 21 assists, respectively.
BCU had a 23-22 first set lead on a Jefferson kill, but the Bears ran off three unanswered points to take the early lead.
Davis had three late kills in the extended second set before Curtis' ace tied the match.
