DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
Brandon Wilkes went 3-for-4 with a home run Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as visiting Boston College took the series finale from Bethune-Cookman, 14-5 in non-conference baseball action at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. However, BCU wins the series stemming from victories on Friday and Saturday evening.
Â
Boston College (4-2) staved off a series sweep from the homestanding Wildcats, as the Eagles used back-to-back four-run innings in the second and third, respectfully, to take an insurmountable 8-1 advantage.
Â
With the Eagles on top 4-1 in the bottom of the second, Bethune-Cookman (3-4) chipped into the lead with a solo homer to left from redshirt senior second baseman
Brandon Wilkes.
Â
For the series, Wilkes batted .636 with seven RBIs, as well as picking up a win on the mound in the series opener.
Â
Boston College would add another two runs in the top of the fourth inning, including a solo home run from second baseman Cody Morissette to extend the visitor's lead, 10-1.
Â
Trailing 11-1 entering the home-half of the sixth, the Wildcats used a Wilkes double to right center in order to score
Zach Spivey, after the senior centerfielder walked in his at-bat earlier in the inning. That pulled BCU to within 11-2 at that point.
Â
Bethune-Cookman and Boston College would match two runs apiece in the eighth inning.
Â
Dante Baldelli sent a two-run home run over the wall in right for the Eagles in the top-half of the frame. Meanwhile, Wilkes scored two with a single back up the middle to plate teammates
Over Torres and Spivey, respectively.
Â
BCU would score its final run of the afternoon in the bottom of the ninth to answer a single score from the Eagles in the top-half of the inning.
Â
Clarence Carter singled back to the mound and worked his way to second on an error from Boston College reliever Jack Nelson. Carter would eventually score on a failed pickoff attempt from Nelson, as he tried to get
Silas Grinstead at first.
Â
Boston College starter Joe Mancini (1-0) earned the win for the Eagles, with the right-hander working five innings, allowing just one run and scattering two hits and two walks in his time on the bump. The loss went to BCU freshman
Carlos Lequerica (0-2), as the rookie tossed just 1.2 innings in his second-ever start, but was tagged for four runs on six hits and a walk.
Â
Wilkes supplied the offensive power for the Wildcats with his 3-for-4 effort that included a home run. Three other Wildcats also collected a hit in the game, including third baseman
Isaak Gutierrez and Carter.
Â
Bethune-Cookman is back in action Friday, March 1, when the Wildcats host Ohio State in the first of a four-game series with the Buckeyes at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
