DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Football enjoyed its fifth National Signing Day under Head Coach
Terry Sims on Wednesday, Feb. 6, as the Office of Athletics Compliance and football staff monitored the fax machine and emails beginning at 7 a.m. The day concluded with the ninth annual Signing Day Bash in the Michael & Libby Johnson Center for Civic Engagement.
Â
The fax machine in the BCU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics began going off at exactly 7:01 a.m., while the Offices of Athletics Compliance and Office of Athletic Communications tag-0teamed to make the announcements public through social media.
Â
With this year's signing class expected to be less than the 25 signed from a year ago, things escalated in the end with young men wanting to be a part of the 2019 incoming class. Therefore, in all, 28 players – including mid-year signees in December, inked their Letter of Intent to play for the Maroon and Gold.
Â
The breakdown of the positions is as follows: 11 defensive backs, seven offensive linemen, four defensive linemen, three linebackers, one kicker, one punter and one receiver.
Â
"I feel great about this year's signing class," said Sims, recently finishing his fourth year at the helm in Daytona Beach. "I think we filled some much-needed holes and brought in some much-needed depth. So, it was a great day overall for us. I couldn't be happier of the job the staff did brining in these young men."
Â
Much like years past, BCU hit the junior college ranks heavy in the early signing period, and spent much of Wednesday focusing on high school student-athletes. The Wildcats brought in 21 high school student-athletes to this year's class.
Â
Defense was the biggest area of focus for this year's class.
Â
Bethune-Cookman pulled in several recruits in the defensive backfield. That includes Eric Barton (CB), Javon Bonsell (SAF), Trevontae Cunningham (SAF), Marquez Delafield (CB), Elijah Deravil (CB), De'Vuntray Hampton (SAF), Omari Hill (CB), Rashaud Pratt (SAF), Uriah Ratliff (SAF), Dennis Shorter (SAF) and Gelique Williams (SAF).
Â
"Defensively, I think we brought in just what we needed – a lot of defensive backs and guys in the secondary," commented Sims. "We added some depth at the linebacker position, and we brought in some guys that can give us depth and some that can come right in and make plays. We also wanted to add some along the defensive line because we lost some really good players from last year at the defensive end position."
Â
On offense, Bethune-Cookman has several players coming back from the 2018 season, including many from the 2017 and '18 signing classes, respectfully. BCU added just one receiver in this year's class, that being Daveno Ellington (Panama City, Fla.). However, the Cats went hard for offensive lineman and hit upon some key personnel that will help moving forward.
Â
The offensive line brought in players such as Kyler Edwards (Tampa, Fla.), Byshire Murrain (Jersey City, N.J.), Damion Powell (Miramar, Fla.), Cyrik Ransom (Cedar Hill, Texas), Travis Robinson (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and Natnael Zemene (Cambridge, Mass.).
Â
"Offensively, we did what we wanted to do, and we wanted to get the offensive line taken care of," remarked Sims. "We brought in some offensive lineman that can play now, and a few freshmen and mid-years that can provide a lot of depth for us, as well as backup some guys at a few positions."
Â
When it comes to an area that Sims takes serious pride in – special teams, there really was not a lot of need for return specialists. But he did have to replace a kicker [
Uriel Hernandez] and a punter [
Javaunie Francis]. So, the 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Coach of the Year went and signed two players – Bryce Coward (Hobart, Tasmania) and Xavier McDonald (Lehigh Acres, Fla.).
Â
"We had guys in place on the special teams unit from last year, but we needed the main ingredients, so to speak, with a punter and a kicker," commented Sims. "Bryce [Coward] and Xavier [McDonald] each provide us with something that will help us score points and flip the field for next season. But we had return men coming back that we feel strongly about, and that allowed us to focus on the kicking game, specifically."
Â
When speaking about what excited him the most this in this year's class, Sims said it was the amount of players they recruited and signed in the defensive backfield.
Â
"I am really excited overall about the number of defensive backs we were able to ink," continued Sims. "Each of them will fight for a spot to play right away, and they each have a talent that suits this ball club. All of them will want to play, and all of them are capable of that as well."
Â
In all, Bethune-Cookman signed 20 players from the
Sunshine State of Florida.
Â
"We wanted to once again lock down home," expressed Sims. "We have so much talent right in our backyard, and that is a benefit for us here. We continue to do a great job of getting players to stay at home, if you will, and that's always a positive with so much great talent here."
Â
Bethune-Cookman will announce the 2019 football schedule following the annual Signing Day Bash around 8:30 pm. It will be available via BCUathletics.com.
