DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman snapped a seven-game losing streak losing streak Wednesday as the Wildcats swept Western Illinois 2-0 and 2-1 at Sunnyland Park.
GAME ONE
Alexis Bermudez threw a three-hit shutout, and the Wildcats scored two in the fourth to take the opener.
Cheyenne Smith scored first on a double-steal, then
Kaiya Epps-Lee singled home
Brianna Paysinger to put BCU (9-21) ahead.
From there, Bermudez sealed the deal as she finished with a three-hitter that included six strikeouts.
BCU's usual sixth inning troubles never materialized as Bermudez turned a 1-6-3 double play and another sharp grounder to keep the Leathernecks at bay.
Paysinger and Jackie Smith each had two hits for the Wildcats.
GAME TWO
The nightcap did have sixth inning drama as Western Illinois took a 1-0 lead.
Paysinger doubled home
Quianah Mitchell and
Cheyenne Smith with two outs to help BCU regain the lead.
The game ended with rightfielder Azaria Smith's throw to Paysinger to get the Leatherneck runner out at third for the final out.
Destiny Enriquez scattered five hits in picking up the win.
