DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman University Head Coach Terry Sims today [April 19, 2019] officially announced the addition of two coaches to his staff.

Ryan Lewis, Sr. will serve as Special Teams Coordinator/Linebackers Coach while Chad Lucas will serve as Wide Receivers Coach for the Wildcats.

A former Wildcat great, Lewis returns to BCU after spending one season as the Defensive Coordinator at Edward Waters College.

Before that, he spent two seasons as a Defensive Quality Control Coach here at Bethune-Cookman University under Sims, where he assisted with the linebackers. In his first year, Lewis worked directly with B-CU standout Tavarus Dantzler. The Homestead, Florida native finished the year with 80 tackles for the Wildcats, and would go on to sign a free agent contract with the Green Bay Packers. The Wildcats ended the year as the nations' top-ranked defense, allowing just 237.8 yards per game. Other categories in B-CU led or finished near the top of the national charts were as follows: third down conversion defense (.250) – first; first downs defense (160) – second; passing yards allowed (157.58) – seventh; tackles for loss (8.6) – ninth; team pass efficiency defense (107.36) – 12th.

A member of the 2010 HBCU and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship team, Lewis was recognized as MEAC Preseason Player of The Year and one of the Top 10 linebackers by The Sports Network, and named a Preseason Second Team FCS All-American in 2011. He finished his senior season with 42 tackles, including 10.5 for loss and a team-high tying four interceptions and five deflections. He also forced three fumbles on the campaign.

He spent two seasons in professional football camps, seeing time in the Arena Football League and the Miami Dolphins preseason camp.

A native of Pompano Beach, Florida, Lewis earned his degree from Bethune-Cookman in 2012, majoring in Physical Education, and Master's Degree from Bethune-Cookman in 2015, majoring in Transformative Leadership.
 
Lucas comes to BCU from his alma mater, Alabama State, where the former NFL receiver served as a skill development coordinator and outside receivers coach.

In 2004 and 2005 Lucas worked with the Hornets coaching the team's wide receivers.  He was a member of the coaching staff helping lead ASU to the 2004 SWAC Championship.

From 2004-2011, he spent time as a professional receiver in the National Football League, NFL Europe, the Canadian Football League, the United Football League and Arena Football League.  As a member of the Amsterdam Admirals in 2006, Lucas led NFL Europe in touchdown receptions and was named first-team All-NFL Europe.

He is a native of Tuskegee and began his collegiate career at Troy University before finishing at Alabama State. During his senior campaign with the Hornets he caught 46 passes for 794 yards and five touchdowns.

Following his professional career, Lucas returned to ASU where finished his degree in marketing, receiving his Bachelor of Science in 2013.
