DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman swept a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference South Division doubleheader from North Carolina A&T Saturday by scores of 3-0 and 5-3 at Sunnyland Park.
Alexis Bermudez threw a four-hit shutout and
Kaiya Epps-Lee hit a two-run homer to pace BCU (19-26 overall, 10-1 MEAC) in the opener while Epps-Lee had three hits in the nightcap to help the Wildcats complete the sweep over the Aggies (8-24, 5-6).
GAME 1
Bermudez improved to 11-17 overall (8-1 in conference play) with her seventh shutout of the season. She walked one, struck out nine, and didn't allow an Aggie runner to get past second.
Epps-Lee's two-out homer to right center in the first would be all the offense BCU needed.
Brianna Sanders added an insurance run in the fourth when she tripled and scored on an error.
It was the second home run of the season for Epps-Lee, the first a grand slam coming against LIU-Brooklyn back on Feb. 15.
GAME 2
An first-inning infield throwing error that allowed Quinah Mitchell to score from first and
Cheyenne Smith to reach third set the tone for BCU in the second game.
Brianna Paysinger's RBI double and an Epps-Lee RBI single helped BCU take the early 3-0 lead.
BCU added two runs in the third for a 5-0 advantage.
Sasha Killings added two hits for BCU.
Destiny Enriquez (6-6) picked up the win, scattering seven hits.
The series concludes Sunday at noon.
