DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – It's Bethune-Cookman vs. Florida A&M. Do we really need to say anything else?
The softball version of the great rivalry continues this weekend when the Rattlers and Wildcats meet at Sunnyland Park Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at noon, and as always, it's a crucial Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series.
Here's the important stuff:
1) Florida A&M (21-23 overall, 12-0 MEAC South) leads Bethune-Cookman (20-27,11-11) by one game in the divisional standing. Simply, whoever wins the series is the No. 1 South Division seed for next month's conference tournament in Ormond Beach.
BCU has won the series five of the previous six years, including last year's three-game sweep in Tallahassee.
2) There's going to be some great pitching. BCU's
Alexis Bermudez, the 2018 MEAC Rookie Of The Year, is 8-1 with a 1.59 ERA in league play, and
Destiny Enriquez (3-0, 2.19 ERA) is coming off a two-win weekend against North Carolina A&T. FAMU has Brandice Boatwright and Kyaira Brown, who have 1.22 and 1.48 ERAs in league play. Â
3) But what about the offense? FAMU's hitting .348 in MEAC play, BCU .309. Kaiya-Epps-Lee has stepped up for BCU after the loss of
Jacki Smith – Epps-Lee is hitting .441 in her last 12 games.
4)
Brianna Paysinger is now BCU's leadoff hitter. Is it working? She's reached safely in the last 12 games and has a six-game hitting streak going.
5) Sunday is Senior Day.
Cheyenne Smith and
Brianna Sanders will be honored in pre-game ceremonies.
