DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –  Bethune-Cookman clinched the Southern Division No. 1 seed for next month's conference tournament with a 5-0, 7-1 doubleheader sweep of Florida A&M Saturday at Sunnyland Park.

Alexis Bermudez threw a two-hit shutout with four strikeouts in the opener as the Wildcats (22-27 overall, 13-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead and 4-0 after three.

In the second game BCU scored six in the fifth – two off a Brianna Paysinger single – to blow open a 1-0 game.

The teams conclude the regular season Sunday at noon. BCU will celebrate Senior Day prior to the game, honoring  Cheyenne Smith and Brianna Sanders.

GAME ONE
Bermudez improved to 12-18 overall and 9-1 in league with her eighth shutout of the season. She was backed by an error-free Wildcat defense.

BCU took a 2-0 lead in the first when Kaiya Epps-Lee scored from second on a throwing error, than Sasha Killings singled home Sanders.

Paysinger and Smith scored on wild pitches in the third as BCU upped its lead to 4-0.

Paysinger tripled home Kayla Traylor in the sixth to conclude the scoring.

GAME TWO
Traylor's two-out single in the fourth not only broke up a Florida A&M (21-25,12-2) no-hitter, it scored Sanders and gave BCU the 1-0 lead.

In the fifth, BCU needed just two hits to plate six runs. Traylor had an RBI single, while Paysinger brought in two more.

Destiny Enriquez won the second game with a three-hit effort. She lost her shutout in the sixth, and Bermudez came in to work the final 1 1/3 inning in relief.

NOTES: BCU has now beat FAMU seven straight games … This was Head Coach Laura Watten's 40th and 41st victories over FAMU … The Wildcats are 12-3 at Sunnyland Park.
