MIAMI, Fla. –Bethune-Cookman took the lead in the fifth but could not answer a retaliation from the University of Miami Friday at Mark Light Field at Alex Rodriguez Park. The Wildcats fell to the Hurricanes, 9-3, in the series opener.
BCU (16-33) took a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Over Torres was hit by a pitch to start the action, and Chase DeBonis sent an RBI double down the left field line for the first run. Later, Khalil Smith grounded out to score DeBonis. Zach Spivey singled up the middle to score Joe Fernando to put BCU ahead.
The 'Canes (32-14) answered with two in the home half of the fifth to begin seven straight runs en route to the home victory.
Anthony Maldonado (3-5) took the loss with seven innings, six hits, five earned runs, one walk, and five strikeouts.
Bryan Melendez allowed three earned runs in the eighth.
The 'Cats continue the three-game series continues Saturday at 7 p.m.
