DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman University Women's Head Basketball Coach
Vanessa Blair-Lewis will be enshrined alongside her father, Robert Blair, in the inaugural Largo (Md.) High School Athletic Hall of Fame on October 6, 2019.
Â
In addition to her success on the court at Largo HS from 1984-88, Blair-Lewis helped set the stage for her father, a 20-year coaching veteran, winning the 1997 Maryland 4A championship by serving as her dad's assistant coach from 1994-96.Â
"Vanessa and her father have had a significant influence on Largo HS," said Largo Athletic Director Ayanna Ball-Ward, who played on that 1997 championship team and has won a state girls basketball championship of her own. "We're excited that their contributions will be chronicled amongst the great coaches and athletes who have impacted this athletic department."
Blair-Lewis had her playing jersey retired at her college alma mater, Mount St. Mary's, last year. Being enshrined with her father should be as memorable a moment.
"I am so humbled by this honor. Largo High School helped to set a valuable foundation in my young life," Blair-Lewis said. "The coaches, teachers and my teammates all poured into my life to help me become the person that I am today. This occasion is even more special because I am able to share it with my father and the other amazing inductees."Â
Now in her 12th season at BCU, Blair-Lewis is coming off a 21-11 campaign – her third straight 20-win season -- that saw the Lady Wildcats overcome the loss of key players to injury to defeat Norfolk State 57-45 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament championship for their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance.
