Hometown Heroics For Williams And @BCUVolleyball In 3-2 Win Over TSU

Lady Wildcats Rally For Memorable Night At Williams' High School

SUGARLAND, Tex. – A five-set instant classic made Head Coach Brittany Williams' return to her high school gym even more memorable Friday night as Bethune-Cookman rallied for a 3-2 (20-25,25-16,23-25,30-28,15-13) victory over Texas Southern Friday night at Fort Bend Austin High School.

Jordan Jefferson had 22 kills and 15 digs for her 35th career double-double and sixth 20-kill match, and freshman Bailey Robinson added 12 kills as the Lady Wildcats (2-3) overcame a fourth-set match point and 8-4 and 9-5 fifth-set deficits to sweep the Tigers (1-4) and give Williams a happy, though somewhat stressful homecoming.

BCU remained in Texas after last week's season opening tournament at Houston Baptist with the campus in Daytona Beach, Fla. closed due to Hurricane Dorian. BCU and Texas Southern, who was scheduled to play in BCU's tournament this weekend, arranged a two-match series, but had to find other places to play with HB&E Arena undergoing preparations for next week's Democratic Presidential debate.

After Thursday's 3-1 victory at Barnett Fieldhouse, Williams had that emotional and surreal moment Friday driving up to her high school campus.

"I made that drive every day my senior year," Williams said. "My players were running down the same hallways I did, and then to walk into my old gym, my old locker room, seeing my championship banner … I'm very thankful for this opportunity."

There were times when Williams thought she might have to suit up after the Tigers rebounded from Thursday's setback and controlled parts of the match.

"Yes, I had that moment, but with two bad knees, no …" Williams smiled. "I'm super proud of how we stepped up tonight."

In the fourth set, Texas Southern led 27-26 and was serving match point before Robinson tied the match with a kill, then combined with Faith Landreneaux for a block to make it 28-27. The Tigers managed another tie, but a Miranda White kill and a Tiger error gave BCU the 30-28 set victory and extended the match to five sets.

Down 9-5 In the fifth set, BCU used a 6-1 run to take an 11-10 lead. Texas Southern regained the lead at 13-12, but a Landreneaux kill tied it, and then an Adams/Landreneaux block put BCU at match point. A Tiger attack error gave BCU the victory.

Adams added nine kills and two blocks, while Landreneaux had seven kills, seven blocks and two aces. Sterling Williamson also had seven kills, and had four blocks.

Ryleigh Taylor (seven digs) and Kortney Curtis (six digs) combined for 51 assists. Shayla Eugene added 12 digs.

The team is scheduled to return to Daytona Beach Saturday after 10 days in Houston.

"We're very thankful for everyone in Texas who showed the love," Williams said.

BCU will next face Boston College Friday at Florida Atlantic University.
