Chanette Hicks scored 24 points as the Spartans (7-7,1-0) held the Lady Wildcats to seven points in the second quarter to take a 34-19 halftime advantage to hand BCU its first loss in a MEAC opener since the 2013-14 campaign.
BCU (8-5,0-1) countered by holding Norfolk State to six points in the third quarter, but never got closer than 51-44 on
Ashlie Howell's free throw with 2:59 remaining and on another Howell free throw with 2:15 left that made it 53-46.
Howell finished with 13 points and nine rebounds for BCU, whose only lead came at 7-6 on an
Ashanti Hunt basket in the first quarter.
Camary Harris, from nearby Suffolk, Va., scored seven points while
Armani Walker added five. Hunt finished with eight rebounds.
BCU faces Howard Monday at 5:30 p.m.
