DAYTONA BEACH, FL – To be considered for enshrinement in a Hall of Fame, the stats have to be there.
In the case of Bethune-Cookman's
Allen Suber, the numbers do back up Friday's announcement that the former Wildcat quarterback has been selected to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame.
These aren't all the stats, but it's a pretty good start of indicating the kind of impact Suber had when he played here from 2000-2003. Consider:
1) Suber holds the B-CU career rushing touchdown record (39) and is second in career rushing yards (2,897). Passing-wise, he's seventh in completions (311), fifth in yards (4,917) and fifth in touchdown. His 240 points is fourth overall behind Eric Weems (264), Isidore Jackson (246) and Jesus Cortez (255).
2) He was the runner-up for the 2000 MEAC Rookie of the Year after stepping in for injured starter Pa'Tell Troutman. Among the highlights that year – rushing for 221 and throwing for 124 in a 34-31 win over Hampton and throwing for 212 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-0 romp over Howard.
3) During what we can now label "The Suber Era" when he was starting quarterback (2001-2003), the Wildcats only one non-conference game (Florida Atlantic,2001) and two in the FCS playoffs (Georgia Southern, Florida Atlantic). In 2002, he and Rashean Mathis led a fourth-quarter comeback for a 30-17 win over Florida Atlantic in whatever the name of the Miami Dolphins' stadium was back then.
4) Speaking of the Dolphins, Suber went 2-0 over Florida International when former Dolphins QB Don Strock was launching that program.
5) From 2001-2003, Bethune-Cookman was 14-3 when Suber had over 200 total yards.
6) Games where he had 100 yards rushing and 100 yards passing from 2001-2003? Ten. Record in those games? 10-0.
7) The key stat in these parts? 2-2 vs. Florida A&M, including the 2003 "Suber to Weems" victory in when he threw an 8-yard game winner to Weems with nine seconds remaining to cap off an 18-point comeback.
8) Against Morgan State in 2002, Suber rushed for 233 yards and threw for 183 yards in a 41-27 victory. He had five combined touchdowns (three rushing, two passing) in a 2003 win over Norfolk State. The year before, he completed 12 of 13 passes (92.3 percent) in a Norfolk State victory.
9) In 2002, Suber was 30
th in the nation in pass efficiency. The national leader that year? Tony Romo. Suber was 19
th nationally in scoring in 2003.
