DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Matthew Garcia drove in four runs – two on an inside the ballpark home run – as Bethune-Cookman downed Alabama A&M 11-2 in the second game of the season opening series for both teams Saturday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
The freshman shortstop used his speed when his fourth inning shot to left center rolled to the wall, scoring him and
Josten Heron to make it 5-0. It was his second two-out hit of the game. Two innings before, Garcia smacked a two-run single with two outs.
Josten Heron's two-run single highlighted a five-run BCU eighth while
Ryan Ayrey had two doubles in the Wildcats' 11-hit night.
Elian Roman,
Boris Pena and
Shamir Morales each registered a RBI.
On the mound,
Alec Mendez, used as a midweek starter last year, struck out six while giving up just one unearned for the win. Isaak Guiterrez,
Steven Ortiz and
Jordan Pinto combined on four innings of no-hit relief, with Pinto striking out two in the ninth.
The Wildcats (2-0) go for the sweep Sunday at noon. Game time has been move up an hour to accommodate Alabama A&M (0-2) travel time.
