BOCA RATON, Fla. – Destiny Enriquez had a strong day in the circle, but Bethune-Cookman dropped both of its 2020 opening day games Friday at the FAU First Pitch Classic.
The two-time defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions fell short in a 1-0 decision to Northern Illinois then took a 5-3 setback to Purdue.
Enriquez, a senior, gave up just one unearned run and four hits in 10 innings of work Friday, walking none and striking out three.
She absorbed the game one loss despite tossing a two hitter, then worked four innings of scoreless relief after Purdue scored three runs to erase a 3-2 Wildcat lead.
BCU out hit its two opponents by a combined 16-9, with freshman
Isabella Sandoval making an impressive debut. She went 4-7 on the day, including two doubles.
Yvonne Siordia  delivered the day's big hit with a two-run first-inning homer that also scored
Quianah Mitchell and gave BCU a 2-1 lead over Purdue. Â Siordia finished the day 3-6, as did
Carrington Robinson.
Kaiya Epps-Lee scored on passed ball in the third to help BCU regain the lead at 3-2.
BCU returns to action Saturday morning against Wisconsin at 9 a.m. then faces Indiana State at 11:15 a.m.
