BCU Suspends All Athletic Activities

Bethune-Cookman University Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Lynn W. Thompson has announced the suspension of all spring sports through the end of the Spring 2020 semester effective immediately.

"Based on the information at hand, and in consideration of all of the health and safety factors of our students and staff, Bethune-Cookman University has joined with the membership of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in suspending all activities related to spring sports as it relates to competition and practice indefinitely," Thompson said.  "We have consulted with our university senior staff and the MEAC conference office and also instructed our compliance office to begin to work on the various NCAA bylaws to protect the eligibility and academic progress of our student-athletes while we deal with this crisis."

The men's basketball team's quarterfinal game at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament in Norfolk, Va. was canceled along with the remainder of the tournament along with track team member Monae Nichols' appearance at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championship in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Also, BCU was hosting the Gary Freeman Invitational and Lady Wildcat Invitational golf tournaments in Daytona Beach, Fla. The women's basketball team's appearance in either the NCAA or WNIT has also been canceled.

"We are in uncharted territory," Thompson said. "We will take every precaution to ensure the safety and well-being of our student-athletes and our staff."

BCU will provide updates as the situation unfolds.
