LONGWOOD, Fla. – Two strong
Victoria Guzman efforts came up short as Bethune-Cookman dropped 2-1 decisions to Detroit Mercy and Creighton Friday at the Spring Games.
Guzman scattered five hits and struck out seven against Detroit Mercy, but the Titans got one big hit – a two-run double – to get that victory.
Against Creighton, Guzman struck out four while giving up two walks and six hits. Creighton broke open a 1-1 tie with a fifth-inning run, but Guzman kept the damage to a minimum by getting out a bases-loaded, one-out jam by fielding a bunt and getting the force at home, then getting a pop out on a full count to end the inning.
The Detroit Mercy game also had a couple of defensive gems –
Carrington Robinson's throw home got a Titan running tagging from out while a
Yvonne Siordia-
Sasha Killings-
Kayla Traylor 5-2-3 double play ended a scoring threat.
Quianah Mitchell drove in BCU's first game run with a fifth inning single. Â She,
Samantha Kelley and
Jacki Smith each had two hits in the opening game.
Mitchell had three hits in the second game. Killings got the RBI thanks to some impressive base running by pinch runner Isabella Morales, who managed to get around the tag at home for the run.
BCU tries it again Saturday, facing Cleveland State at 11:15 a.m. and Long Island at 4:15.
