Daytona Beach, Fla. – The Wildcats weathered some late-game drama to sweep conference foe Alabama A&M, Sunday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium.
Bethune-Cookman (4-15, 4-4 SWAC) fell behind as far as 13-7 in the opening set, but from there, it was all Wildcats. B-CU took the first set 25-22 and powered through the second set, 25-18.
The Wildcats opened the third set with a 6-0 run, but the Bulldogs (3-16, 3-4 SWAC) battled back to knot the game at 13-13. The game came down to the wire, but a service ace from
Alleah Dallas dashed all Bulldog hopes at 28-26 to complete the sweep.
"It is always exciting to get a SWAC win on our home court," head coach
Brittany Williams said postgame. "We are excited about what the girls did tonight. We just have to make sure we continue that push for the rest of the season."
Much of the Wildcats success in the sweep was due to the play of middle blockers Dallas and
Malina Spencer. Both finished with a .600 hitting percentage for the game. Dallas finished with ten kills, including the game-winning service ace, while Malina added six. Williams was impressed with the duo.
"Our middles are continuing to step up," Williams said. "We know when we can pass, we can play. We have some of the top middles in this conference and it is great to be able to get them the ball consistently because we know they are going to score for us."
Madison Coates set up the Wildcats with 18 assists.
Jasmine Moore led the team with 14 digs.
The Wildcats will stay home this week and return to Moore Gymnasium Friday night, Oct. 22, to take on Mississippi Valley State 6 p.m.
