@BCUGRIDIRON Defense Gets Seven Sacks In Loss To #20 Jackson State

JACKSON, MS  – Bethune-Cookman's defense produced seven sacks but were not able to hold off #20 Jackson State on Saturday afternoon as they fell, 42-12.

The Wildcats started fast as they scored first on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Shannon Patrick to Dylaan Lee in the back of the endzone giving B-CU an early 6-0 lead after a missed point after attempt.

Bethune-Cookman extended the lead to 9-0 when freshman kicker Marcos Gamboa connected on a 32-yard field goal.

JSU quarterback Shedeur Sanders took over in the second quarter as he connected with Malachi Wideman on TD passes of 28 and 4 yards and also ran it in from 17-yards out giving the Tigers a 21-9 halftime lead.

Jackson State took the second-half kickoff in for a score when Isaiah Bolden returned the kick 94-yards, extending the JSU lead to 28-7.

The Wilcats cut the lead to 28-12 when Gamboa converted on his second field goal of the game from 23-yards out.

JSU closed out the scoring when Sanders connected with Wideman on his third and fourth TD catches of the game this time from 39 and 23 yards making the score 42-12.


Turning Point
After taking a 9-0 lead B-CU allowed 28 unanswered points giving the Tigers the cushing that they needed for the win.

Individual Leaders
Offensively Bethune-Cookman was led by Patrick who finished 7-of-20 for 119 yards and a touchdown. .

Defensively, B-CU held the Jackson State offense to just 23 rushing yards and sacked Sanders seven times. Tony Bowman finished with two sacks and five tackles, while Caleb Sutherland had a game-high ten tackles and a sack. Wildcats leading tackler Untareo Johnson finished with nine tackles in the lose.

Wildcat punter Benjamen Lennon punted the ball five times for an avg. of 48.0 while pinning the Tigers inside the 20-yardline three times and also punting a long of 63 yards.

Next Up
After an open week on Oct. 30, Bethune-Cookman returns to action on Nov. 6 for Senior Day as the Wildcats host Alcorn State. Kick-off is set for 12 noon ET and will be streamed on ESPNU.
