Wildcats Fall Late to Alcorn State

Daytona Beach, Fla.  – A buzzer-beating three fell just short for the Wildcats as they fell to Alcorn State 70-67 in a thriller at Moore Gymnasium.

How It Happened

The Wildcats (5-14, 3-4 SWAC) had a strong opening half, leading by as much as seven. Marcus Garret paced the B-CU offense with nine points as the Wildcats shot 53 percent in the first half to enter the break up 35-32.

With six minutes left to play, Alcorn State (6-13, 5-2 SWAC) took its first lead since early in the first quarter, 61-59, riding a 13-0 run to a seven-point lead. Three points from Joe French, a Kevin Davis layup, and two free throws from Damani McEntire brought the Wildcats back to within two with 30 seconds to play.

The two teams traded free throws, and the Wildcats got the ball with a chance to tie the game in the dying seconds, but a three pointer from McEntire fell short as the Braves took the 70-67 victory.

"We let one slip," Wildcats head coach Reggie Theus said postgame. "I thought that we were playing better than that team for the first 30 minutes of the game."

The Wildcats made only nine of 16 free throws and allowed 24 points off of turnovers in the loss.

"The guys played hard. They put themselves in position to win the game, but it's the little things that make you winners," Theus said. "We're growing as a team, but we're just not there yet."

Notes
  • Marcus Garrett, Joe French, and Kevin Davis each scored in double figures in the game – Garrett led with 21 on 8-12 shooting.
  • The Wildcats limited Alcorn to only 39 percent shooting in the game.
  • The Wildcats out-rebounded the Braves, 35-31.
  • B-CU scored 15 second-chance points in the game.
