French, Garrett Top Twenty, But Wildcats Fall to Hornets

Mobile, Ala.  – One of the highest scoring efforts for the Wildcats this season, led by two scoring performances over 20 by Joe French and Marcus Garrett, was not enough for B-CU as they fell to Alabama State, 79-73, Saturday night in Mobile, Ala.

How It Happened

It was a closely contested game for much of the first half until the Wildcats (5-15, 3-5 SWAC) took an eight point lead on a Joe French jumper midway through the period. The Hornets (5-15 4-4 SWAC) battled back to tie things at 27 all with three minutes to go in the half, but a B-CU scoring burst took the Wildcats into the half up eight.

The Wildcats took as much as a 12-point lead early in the second half on a dunk from Dylan Robertson, and led by double digits as late as six minutes remaining. Alabama State erupted for a 13-0 run to take a 68-65 lead just two minutes later – where they would stay for good.

Despite the Wildcats best efforts to reclaim the lead, the Hornets held on for the 79-73 victory.

French led the Wildcats with 27 points on 10-20 shooting, while Garrett followed with 24 and six assists. Kevin Davis also finished in double digits with 10 points to go along with six rebounds. Dylan Robertson grabbed seven boards.

Trace Young led the Hornets with 21 points and 8 rebounds. Two other Hornets also finished in double digits in the win.

Notes
  • The Wildcats finished with better field goal percentage and three-point percentage, and the two teams finished even in free throws.
  • The Wildcats out-rebounded the Hornets, 32-38.
  • Alabama State scored 23 points on 16 Wildcat turnovers.
  • The Hornets did much of their damage on the fast break, scoring 20 fast break points to B-CU's 1.
  • The Wildcats have topped 70 points in a game only three other times this season - two of those three came in wins.
