Wildcats Fall, 41-17 to Tennessee State

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Wildcats fell behind early and could not recover as Tennessee State rode a homecoming charge to a 41-17 victory, Saturday evening at Nissan Stadium.

How It Happened

The Wildcats (1-4, 1-1 SWAC) defense stood strong to open the contest, forcing a three-and-out that quickly turned into points as Jalon Jones drove the Wildcats down the field. Dylan Moghaddam connected on a short field goal to put B-CU up 3-0.

It didn't take long for the Wildcats to head back to the Tiger territory. Omari Hill-Robinson came through with an interception to give the B-CU offense the ball just over midfield. This time around, the kick was blocked.

The Tigers took the lead in the final minutes of the first quarter on a 22-yard touchdown run that made it 7-3.

Tennessee State (1-4, 0-0 OVC) scored quickly to open the second quarter on a short touchdown pass. A few minutes later, the Tigers forced a B-CU fumble on a punt attempt, taking it back to the endzone for the 21-3 lead.

With three minutes left in the first half, TSU padded onto their lead with a 45-yard field goal that made it 24-3. A pick-six on the succeeding drive made it 31-3.

B-CU found the endzone thanks to a fumble deep in TSU territory recovered by Uriah Ratliff. Que'Shaun Byrd cashed in with a two-yard touchdown run that made it 31-10.

The Wildcats showed signs of life in the fourth quarter as Jalon Jones scrambled for a 67-yard score that made it 34-17.

On the succeeding kickoff, the Tigers could not corral the kick. Devuntray Hampton recovered the ball at the TSU 6, but the Wildcats came up short on fourth down. A 27-yard touchdown run made it 41-17, Tigers.

Notes
  • An interception early in the first quarter for Omari Hill-Robinson marks his third-straight week with a pick. This marks the longest such streak of his career. He had back-to-back picks once last season.

  • TE Kemari Averett has caught a pass in every game since joining the Wildcats. He extends his streak to 16 games.
  • Que'Shaun Byrd has four touchdowns through four games this season. He had five all of last season.
  • Ge'Mon Eaford led the Wildcats with 7 total tackles. He had totaled just five total tackles through four games this season.
