DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Zion Harmon scored 15 points and Marcus Garrett posted a triple-double of 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as Bethune-Cookman downed Trinity Baptist 83-46 Wednesday night in Moore Gymnasium.
How it Happened
Bethune-Cookman shot 64.7 percent from the field in the first half and held the Eagles (1-4) scoreless the final 5:47 of the period to take a 50-22 halftime lead. The Wildcats' biggest lead was at 81-29 on a Garrett jumper with 8:29 remaining.
"Character matters," Theus said after the game. " We have a team that has good character. They listen, and it shows."
Kevin Davis added 13 points, and Joe French 11 as the Wildcats (2-2) won their second straight game. Dylan Robertson and Elijah Hulsewe each added 10.
Harmon, a freshman, was 6-10 from the field and added four rebounds and three assists in 21 minutes of action.
"Zion has made tremendous strides," Theus said. "He's gifted offensively - the defensive side of the ball is what's going to make him a real player. It he can play as efficiently on defense as he does on offense, we're going to have an all-conference guy."
Damani McEntire swiped five steals. Robertson blocked three shots.
Garrett, a senior, became the third player in Bethune-Cookman history to register a triple-double, joining Aulcie Perry (1972 against Edward Waters) and Adrien Coleman (2012 vs. Webber International). Garrett had both nine assists and nine rebounds in the first half.
"I don't think he took a jump shot until the second half," Theus said. "It was all rebounding, hustle plays, and his defense was strong. Marcus plays hard non-stop. He takes it personally whey he doesn't do something right. I'd really love for some of that to rub off on our young guys."
Fausto Alvarez led Trinity Baptist with 11.
14 different Wildcats saw the floor Wednesday night.
"It's important on a night like this to get some time in for our younger guys," Theus said. "They're the future of our program, so I was happy to get them some minutes over these past few games."
