Wildcats Drop Series Finale to FGCU

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.   – A slow afternoon at the plate for the Wildcats was enough for FGCU to take game three of the weekend series, 5-1, Sunday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark

How It Happened

The Wildcats (1-6, 0-0 SWAC) struggled to string anything together at the plate, totaling only five hits as a team.

FGCU (6-2, 0-0 ASUN) opened the scoring early with three runs in the first two innings. The Eagles tacked on runs in the fifth, sixth, and three in the ninth, racking up eight runs on eleven hits.

Boris Peña sent a solo homer over the left field wall in the bottom of the eighth - his second homer in as many games  - but that would be all for B-CU.

"I'm proud of what Boris has been able to do for us to start the season," Wildcats head coach Jonathan Hernandez said after the game. "To be able to come back from some tough injuries and see the ball like he has been is a credit to how hard he's working."

Joan Gonzalez suffered the loss – in five innings, he allowed five runs on eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

"Obviously a disappointing series for us as a team," Hernandez said. "We'll just keep plugging away. We'll get back to work and we'll be ready for Jacksonville on Wednesday."

Notes
  • Both teams left eight men on base.
  • Knickolas Billings pitched three innings in relieve, allowing two hits, no walks, and no runs with three strikeouts.

Up Next
The Wildcats will now set their sights on a weeknight matchup with another ASUN program as Jacksonville comes to town Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
