JACKSON, Miss. – Hannah Ortega threw a one-hit shutout as Bethune-Cookman made its Southwestern Athletic Conference debut with a 3-0 victory at Jackson State Friday.
The freshman struck out seven and walked one as the Wildcats (6-15 overall, 1-0 SWAC) registered their first shutout of the season.
"This was the best game Hannah's had this season," said B-CU coach
Laura Watten. "She was lights out from the beginning, spinning the ball and mixing her pitches. She didn't let anything get to her."
Jackson State (9-8,0-1) didn't get a runner past second base and posted its only hit in the fifth.
B-CU did all its scoring in the fifth.
Joslynn Davis led off with a single and would score on
Carrington Robinson's bunt.
Robinson scored on
Kayla Traylor's fielder's choice while
Haley Parks, who singled, scored on a
Briana Paysinger fielder's choice.
Parks and Robinson each had a stolen base.
""We came out with good energy today," Watten said.
B-CU and Jackson State play a doubleheader starting Sunday at 1 p.m. EST (12 p.m. CST).
