DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Hannah Ortega gave up just one unearned run in registering two victories, and Bethune-Cookman's offense came to life as the Wildcats swept a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday at Sunnyland Park.
Ortega fired a two-hit shutout as the Wildcats run-ruled the Hornets 8-0 in the opener, then scattered eight hits over seven innings in relief as the Wildcats rallied from a 5-1 deficit for a 6-5 decision in 10 innings.
The Wildcats (8-18 overall, 3-3 SWAC) won the series over the Hornets (12-14,4-2).
GAME 1
Briana Paysinger and
Ciera Clark each drove in two runs as the Wildcats registered a season-high offensive output.
After
Joslynn Davis scored on a wild pitch, Clark drove a two-run double to make it a 3-0 game.
Shania Owens scored on a Davis single in the second, then Paysinger launched a third inning home run that gave B-CU a 5-0 lead.
Paysinger picked her second RBI in the fourth to close out a three-run inning that included
Carrington Robinson score on a fielding error and
Haley Parks on a wild pitch.
Oretega struck out six and walked none in the five-inning win.
GAME 2
Davis' tenth-inning single brought home in Owens as the Wildcats shut down the Hornets the final six innings.
B-CU tied the game with a four-run fourth.
Kayla Traylor scored on a wild pitch, then Parks singled home two runs and evened the game when she beat the throw home on a fielder's choice.
Parks was 4-5 in game two, while Davis had three hits.
Julissa Gomez and Traylor each had two hits.
Backed by strong and timely defense, Ortega scattered eight hits, walking one and striking out three.
NEXT UP: B-CU travels to Mississippi for the second time this season, facing Mississippi Valley State in a three-game series starting Friday.
